Thomas F. Credle Jr (1897 - 1954) lost his right arm in an accident at a cotton processing mill. The mishap happened in the early 1920s at the local mill in Bayboro NC, while using at a cotton gin, a machine invented by Eli Whitney to separate cotton fiber from the seeds. His right arm was caught in the gears and mangled beyond the saving point. Hattie Himbry (1916-2001) his oldest child, who was 5 years old at the time told of him being brought home and the arm being cut off above the elbow on the kitchen table by Dr. Daniel Dees. Even though he was right handed ,however he eventually learn to use his left arm effectively and even learn to write.
One of the oldest keepsakes of the family is a block of wood which has no intrinsic value but has deep sentimental value, for it is as old as
the old homestead which was built in the early 1900s. The block was used as door stop for the kitchen door. It is now taken to all family
reunions and gatherings to sort of remind us from whence we came. There are number of other relics, old Iron’s, 12 gauge shootgun, Quilts, Family Bible, blue and white ceramic vase, the backyard water pump and a number of hand written letters from Amanda to her children.

The Old Block of Wood
Quilts are a narrative part of many cultures. Historically, traditional quilts were made by hand. The materials for traditional quilts came from many sources. Often the cloth used to make the blankets came from familiar items, such as clothing. From the choice of material to the design and pattern, quilts can tell stories about the time period in which they were made and the people who made them. In many cases, groups of friends and neighbors would gather to work on one quilt together. This greatly reduced the amount of time it would have taken one person to make a quilt. These social gatherings were known as “quilting bees.” .
